I've been enjoying the warm weather and going on more frequent outings recently, which means that I'm spending less time reading. Since I spend about 4 months out of the year cooped up indoors, I'm soaking up the sun as much as possible while I can! This explains why I only read one book this past week.
I'm mortified to admit that I'd never heard of Judith Heumann before searching for disability narratives in my library's catalogue and seeing her memoir, Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist (which she co-wrote with Kristen Joiner) among the results. What a badass! This intense, powerful narrative of the formative events in her life and of her world-changing work towards acceptance, autonomy and dignity for disabled people kept me on the edge of my seat. I wish we could all experience the strong sense of community she describes. Highly recommended!
